Updated Einstein Math Academy to v3.6

In v3.6, a new survival mode is added. It’s a mode to serve between quick and timeless. A very challenging mode that requires finding an equation within 15 seconds. Each equation found drops the max time down by a second, until it stops at 5 seconds.  Each equation found also adds 3 seconds, but it can’t go over the max time left.

Why I changed my developer name to Brain Gaming

Okay first off, I used my name Eddie Hsu as my developer name. However, after using the market for awhile, there were a lot of Chinese developers that flooded the market with crappy apps. Sure there were many other non-Chinese developers doing the same, but there were a lot more Chinese developers because there are a lot more Chinese and many other reasons.  I believe Americans have a negative bias against Chinese products, so it would be more beneficial for me to change my developer name. I’m sure you are a great unbiased loving person, but this issue is real and it is what it is.

So I changed my name to Brain Games for awhile. However that name was taken in twitter, so I am now changing my twitter name to @BrainGaming, and developer name to Brain Gaming in the Android Market.

Evo 4G with 7 days battery life

This is a very old post from a short-lived deleted blog I had in the past before creating my personal website.

I am bringing this post back due to a recent post on phandroid:
http://phandroid.com/2011/08/25/droid-bionic-shots-show-good-battery-life-on-3g/

———————

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2010

So I’ve done a minimal usage test under this forum post:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-tips-tricks/198701-expecting-5-days-stock-battery.html

And the results were a little better than I expected, the battery lasted more than a week. After 7 days and 2 hours, I still have 9% battery left.

My usage:

10 phone calls (total probably around 10 minutes)

5 text messages

2 sessions of manually turning 3g ON and autosyncing my work calendar

3 sessions of short usage of navigating around the phone (calendar, settings, etc.)

30-40 times of checking clock

My settings:

Rooted and installed ROM superevo (fastest in xda’s ROM wiki with linpack scoring 40)

Installed Kernel 7.6 BFS SnapTurbo enabled

Installed setcpu with profile of screen off set to 245mhz, while keeping regular usage at 1ghz

Turned off background data and autosync

Turned off 3g (it can be turned back on manually within 1 or 2 seconds)

Haters:

There are some in the forum that mentioned that I’m not using my phone, and some will never understand when their minds are fixed within their own usage patterns. First off, this is a minimal usage test to prove the battery potential, and I argue most of those users do not understand how to use their battery effectively to maximize its potential. There are tradeoffs, and I believe simply setting the CPU to 245 mhz while the screen is off can benefit anyone’s battery life yet not hamper their daily usage. For those who plug in all the time, they may be accustomed to that, and therefore don’t care about gaining half-a-day, or a-day’s more worth of battery life. I personally do not like charging my phone often, and when I do use my phone heavily, I still like to use the battery much more efficiently.

HTC/Sprint/Google:

I did a similar minimal usage test before with the stock EVO and it only lasted 2.5 days. With all my new tweaks, I lasted more than 7 days. Obviously HTC, Sprint, and Google need to learn from my configuration, because they may be able to sell more phones if EVO’s battery life was better, or if there were battery conservation modes or methods. With the ROM I’m using, my phone no longer randomly wakes up the screen (I’m thinking it’s some application requesting updates, but I was never able to pinpoint it as I tried disabling everything), and useless background apps do not randomly run (in fact I don’t have them installed).

Still more potential left:

1. Depending on your reception signal, your battery potential may be better or worse. My reception was usually 1 to 2 bars, but I typically have no issues with that.

2. My tests were using 245 mhz while screen was off, and 1ghz while screen was on. I am now going to change this to 128 to 245 mhz set to conservative while the screen is off, and 128 to 576 mhz set to conservative while the screen is on.

3. I’ve read using the King’s Kernel may further improve battery life, but i’m fine with the snapturbo kernel as of now and don’t want to test which one is better. I’m happy with my current battery potential.

4. I did not dim the screen brightness, turn off haptic feedback, nor phone call vibration. I don’t think these are significant compared to the cpu and network battery consumption.

Back to normal usage:

So I’m moving back to my regular usage now, which is some real-time stocks, some web surfing, more auto-syncing with work email and calendar, using navigation and camera, book reading, and more phone/text usage. Still I’ve learned how to conserve more battery life, as I’ve realized with the superevo, it runs very fast, so even 576 mhz should be enough for typical usage.

Note:

Before anyone goes running to install the superevo ROM (basically vanilla froyo with a nice theme, and many battery/performance tweaks), note that some things don’t currently work such as the 4g, FM radio, and HDMI out. Also if you rooted via unrevoked, you need to download a missing file before wiping. Always do a nandroid backup first before trying anything risky.

New Notes (August 26, 2011):
This was a very old test, with a very old ROM, so I don’t recommend duplicating this effort.

Ranked 178 Top 2% in Brain and Puzzle

Looking at the stats in appbrain.com, there are 12722 Brain and Puzzle games, and 504 (top 4%) are 50,000+ downloads. 3225 are paid apps, so that means 9497 are free apps. I then counted the ranking under the top free category of Brain and Puzzle section and Einstein Math Academy ranked 178. So 178/9497 is within top 2%.

Even though the ranking of my game is getting better and better, due to the new market design, my app is getting less download than before. I suspect it’s because the default search only displays 2 results from Apps, which also shows result from books and movies. Also the new market layout seems to guide people to just download from the top 10 apps of each screen.

Plans for v3.0 and Mathgame Review

I started a twitter account @androidphd, please follow me: http://twitter.com/#!/androidphd

On twitter I met Scott who wrote an entertaining review of Mathgame:
http://androidfreegamereviews.blogspot.com/2011/06/mathgame.html

I was happy to hear that the game is fun and addicting.

Considering his feedback, and as well as a bunch of enhancements I have jotted down, I will continue to  improve Mathgame. The next version 3.0 coming within a few weeks will make the game a lot more complete with music, sound effects, and a splash screen to improve loading and performance.

After v3.0 I still have more plans to make the game more dynamic with different daily backgrounds and adding of two extra modes.

Stay tuned, and as always please download, google +1, rate my app 5-stars, and leave a good comment in android market to help me out. Thanks.

Mathgame hit 10,000 downloads

Mathgame made it to the 10,000 to 50,000 download category!

It’s barely hanging on 4.5 stars with the 4.25 star average rating.  Please help me out by rating 5-stars because 4-stars or less would actually drop the rating.

Mathgame v2.0 is the game I wanted to make

Although Mathgame v1.0 through v1.5 was fun, as an avid gamer myself, I’ve always felt there was some depth missing. I am excited to announce the release of Mathgame v2.0 which solved that issue. In v2.0, with the addition of the random silver and gold bonus pieces to increase the base score, and also the removal of the 9x max bonus multiplier (well max is now 999x), the game is really dynamic, fun, and extremely challenging now. The scores can grow exponentially and involves a lot more skill. I was able to achieve 30million in normal game, and 900k in quick game.
